Providing a future

Kamthang, 15 years old is the youngest graduate of the Burmese Dorcas women's tailoring training centre in Delhi. After graduating in 2010, she decided to return to Burma. She is the only tailor in her village and is doing very well.

After 50 years of military dictatorship, the recent measures of the new Burmese government and the last elections held the 1st April 2012 are a significant step towards democracy. However poverty is a reality in Burma.

Burma Assist enables Burmese people to become self-reliant through community-led projects providing skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Since 2009, we are supporting the Dorcas Centre, a Burmese community tailoring training centre in Delhi, where over 10,000 Burmese people fled. It provides the skills and the self-confidence that enable women to generate an income for surviving in India, if they are resettled, or in Burma if they go back.

Currently we are exploring whether and how Burma Assist can support community projects inside Burma.
