Since 1988 fear and poverty have led many Burmese people to flee their country. More than 100,000 of them, mostly Chin people (one of the ethnic nationalities of Burma), are currently trying to survive in India.
At the beginning of April 2012, significant changes occurred with the new Burmese government. What will happen for the Burmese refugees now?
They have been facing harsh living conditions in Delhi. In Burma poverty is a reality. Being able to generate an income is crucial in India. It is crucial in Burma too.
Many Burmese refugees have decided to stay in Delhi for a while. Years ago they left Burma and all they possessed. Going back is not easy and prudently they want to observe how things continue to unfold in Burma.
Most of the Burmese live in the west of Delhi, in areas with poor sanitation and overcrowded housing. Language is a challenge and as foreigners, they typically face discrimination. For women security is an issue.
